On the 28thof November 2017 The EduCamp III project held its Inauguration Event. The purpose of the event was to introduce members of the Boulaq community and key stakeholders in the project to the overall EduCamp initiative that was started in 2010 and introduce the concept of Education for Sustainable Development in Egypt. The event was held at the New Cairo Campus in the American University in Cairo and the event welcomed teachers, parents, ministry officials, and many members from the Boulaq Community
The attendees were welcomed to the event by Prof. Hassan El-Fawal, the Dean of the School of Science & Engineering at the American University in Cairo. This was followed by speeches from ministry representatives and the heads of the NGO partners participating in the EduCamp II Project, Al-Mofid & Rowad El-Ghad.
Prof. Hani Sewliam then introduced the core objectives of the project and explained that the objective of EduCamp III is to transform the schools in Egyptian informal areas into schools that meet the objectives of the Country’s Sustainable Development Strategy “Egypt 2030”. He also mentioned that The project is coordinated by the Center for Sustainable Development at the AUC and funded by the European Union and The German Government under the Participatory Development Program in Urban Areas.
The event ended with a fruitful discussion between the different stakeholders in which the different members of the community discussed the major challenges and problems facing Al-Boulaq and the students as well as how they might cooperate to address these issues.
